Miscellaneous

My brother is spending 8 weeks in Tanzania this summer, studying Swahili and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.  He arrived there this morning!  Follow his blog at http://summerintanzania.blogspot.com.

So yesterday, Tim started pontificating about the messy kitchen.  There was stuff all over the counters, as usual.  You see, the kitchen counters are the only place in the house that Ben cannot reach yet!  Therefore, anything that we don’t want Ben to have, ends up on the counters.

He pointed out the Lysol Antibacterial Spray and said, “we shouldn’t have this stuff laying around.  Ben could get it and spray it into his eyes.”  Then, I kid you not, before I even had time to react, he took the spray bottle, pointed it into his eye, and squeezed, attempting to demonstrate the grave danger Ben was in.  Apparently, he thought the spray nozzle was off.  He was wrong.

Where can I put things so that Tim won’t get into them???

When I was on maternity leave, I got a tiny bit lonely.  I’m not complaining for a minute- I LOVED being at home with Ben.  But the lack of adult interaction did get to me a little bit.  I would surf the web while feeding Ben.  One morning at 4am, I logged on to Facebook to see what my little brother was up to.  I signed up for an account and made him my “friend.”  Then I found my sister.  Before long, I found several real-life friends on Facebook.  It was really neat.  Soon, people were “finding” me!  I’ve reconnected with several high school and college friends that I haven’t seen or heard from in years.  It’s been really interesting catching up.  It’s sort of like magic- like people didn’t exist for years and then suddenly they are there again, only now they have 3 kids and live in Kansas!

But I have to wonder, is it really magic?  I have to admit to having a couple “facebook friends” that I’m not sure I’ve ever talked to in real life.  Are they really my friends?  And regarding the old friends I’ve “reconnected” with- is it really a connection when they are just a face on a list?

What say you, dear readers?

Hooray!  I finally figured out how to post pictures on WordPress and get them to be the right size!

I found this in my web travels yesterday:

Dancing Bears

As I was watching it, Tim said he had already seen it, which prompted me to say, “you don’t know me at all, do you?” because he failed to send me the link, or even mention it.

Bears are definitely my favorite wild animal.  I’ve been lucky enough to see several of them in the wild, both in West Virginia and Montana.  My dad tells me that he knows the lead scientist on the bear filming project (not the one who put the video to music…).

I found this on wvupressbox.com – but it’s actually a You Tube video (from the Duke game):

Tweak!

Thank you to everyone who played in my first-ever contest! I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the “captions.”

I was planning on posting this in the middle of the night last night while Ben was nursing, but (woohoo!) he didn’t wake up!

Here are your random numbers:

Jennifer left comment #6, so she wins the $5/$50 Target coupon.

All the captions were GREAT, but I said I would post my 3 favorites, so here they are (in alphabetical order by author):

From Heidi Ho: The Department of Education’s new requirements for standardized test preparation.

From jandcandme: hukd on fonics, wurkd fer me!

From Mary Kathryn: Hmmm….. To read the book or eat the book? THAT is the question.

Thanks again to everyone for playing!!!

Welcome! I’m glad you made it over to my new blog. In case you’re wondering why I changed, I’ll tell you now. If you don’t care why I changed, skip down 2 paragraphs for information on how to enter a fun contest! It all started when I wanted a different template for my blog. I found several I really liked at WordPress. Then I was checking out links on my friend Jennifer’s blog and found a post from jandcandme that got me thinking about one day printing a copy of the blog since it’s such a good record of Ben’s life. Finally, I wanted a new url. Not that I don’t love “benjamin-david.whatever.com.” It’s just a tiny bit short-sighted. What if we have another kid? (And, no, I’m not announcing anything). I was able to import my entire “old” blog very easily to this site! Unfortunately, Blogger doesn’t have an “import” feature, so we’re here to stay for the foreseeable future!

Before you start thinking WordPress is perfect, I want to alert you to a few drawbacks I’ve found: You can’t change the templates around unless you buy a CSS edit upgrade for $15/yr (and even then you have to edit the code). Adding pictures seems trickier than in Blogger, but maybe I just haven’t figured it out yet. Also, the fonts are smaller and you can’t change them without the above-mentioned upgrade. The “widgets” (similar to Blogger’s “page elements” are a little harder to figure out. It also doesn’t play nicely with Apple’s Safari browser, but it works well with Firefox.

To celebrate Ben’s new Baby Blog (and my new Mommy Blog), I am having a contest! There are 2 ways to win. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post with an original caption to the picture below:

100_2818-11.jpg

I will use a random number generator to select the first winner. That person will win a coupon good for $5 off your $50 purchase at Target (exp. 4/17/08)! In addition, I will choose my 3 favorite captions to display in a post (along with a link to your blog, if you have one)!

Have more than one great caption idea? Go ahead and enter more than once!

Not a Target shopper? Enter anyway – Maybe you know someone you could give the coupon to. Or, you could always decline the prize and I could give it to someone else.

The contest ends Saturday, 3/22/08 at midnight (Eastern Daylight Time).

***P.S. There is a link to leave comments at the top of this post. :)

When Tim and I did in vitro fertilization, my good friend sophanne kept a digital scrapbook of the entire thing. It was before I knew much about blogging and she offered to do it so I said sure! I really can’t say how grateful I am that she did this for us! I emailed her updates after each appointment and she posted them online. We now have a record of the entire thing- and looking back, it’s amazing how quickly little details get lost.

Now that I have my own blog, I thought it would be nice to have those posts be a part of this blog. So, over the next several days, I am going to be copying those posts to this blog. I just wanted to give my dear readers a heads up that “new old” posts would be showing up.

P.S.- The IVF posts are going to show up in the archives since I’m putting their original date (2007) on them. But, if you use a feed reader, they will show up as “new.”
